The History of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church

By L. Jarod Pearson

Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church was founded in the Year 1929 and is the second oldest African-American church in Cowan, Tennessee.

The original structure was a simple, wood-frame building located near Thorogood Cemetery in the Mars Hill section of town.  The building collapsed from a strong storm that swept the area in the 1950's.  The congregation met in homes and other public buildings until a larger brick structure was constructed on Mars Hill adjacent to the railroad tracks.

Mt. Sinai has a long history of community involvement, and some members of the church drive from other counties to attend Sunday services and church activities.

I am working with members of Mt. Sinai to locate photos, stories, and other information about the church's history.  As we access more information about the church, I will post an expanded history article. J.P.
