A New Car on "The Price is Right!"

By:  Mary Kay Chattin Brown

"In the Spring of 1965, Ottie Shook, her sister Mary Chattin, and friends rode the train from Cowan to New York City for a theatre tour.  Included in the tour were tickets to the taping of "The Price is Right" (Daytime).

Ottie was chosen from the audience for a celebrity to play the game for her.  The game player was Dorothy LaMour.  She won a car, a new Mercury convertible, for Ottie!  When the game was over, Dorothy confided in Ottie that they had been car shopping for her son and so she had an idea what the car would be priced at.

Ottie had to go to a warehouse elsewhere in the city to pick up the new car.  Becky Anderton, a friend from Winchester also on the tour, went with her and the two ladies drove the new Mercury all the way from New York City back to Cowan.

The car in the picture is the one driven home.  However, soon after, Ottie exchanged it for another one which was completely light blue.  (The original car had a factory defect, hence the need to exchange it.)  Ottie drove it for many, many years, usually very fast!"
